Presidents Cup 2026 at Medinah: Team USA, the International Team and the Race to 30 Points

On 24 September 2026 the first ball leaves the club at the 1st tee of Medinah Country Club in Illinois. Fourteen years ago, on this same course, Team Europe walked into Ryder Cup Sunday 10-6 down and walked out 14.5-13.5 winners. Medinah is a course of comebacks. Once again an away side arrives as the underdog.

From Incheon, where I work as a club financial analyst, the 2026 Presidents Cup reads first as a data set. Thirty points spread across four days. Two selection systems that do not share a unit of measurement. A ban still in force after four years. And ten consecutive editions without a United States defeat.

I spent close to a week rebuilding both teams' selection records, cross-checking every qualifying window, every cut-off date, every weighting change. What stopped me was not the names. It was that two teams are chosen by two non-convertible systems and then placed on the same course, in the same format, for the same trophy.

Cash flow never lies, but the balance sheet does. At the Presidents Cup, the balance sheet is the points system.

CONTEXT: A BIENNIAL EVENT, TWO MEASURING STICKS

The Presidents Cup is a biennial team competition run by the PGA Tour, in which the United States face the International Team, covering the rest of the world outside Europe. It has been played since 2026 and alternates between the United States and other nations. Canada, South Korea, Australia and South Africa have all hosted.

The 2026 edition runs from 24 to 27 September at Medinah Country Club, Illinois, a venue that hosted the 2026 Ryder Cup along with multiple US Opens and PGA Championships. The 2028 contest goes to Kingston Heath Golf Club in Victoria, Australia. The 2030 edition heads to Bellerive Country Club, Missouri.

The event returned to even-numbered years to avoid clashing with the Ryder Cup. The Ryder Cup moved to odd-numbered years after its 2026 postponement caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. That scheduling adjustment decides commercial windows, player rest weeks and the television rights value of both events.

The format has four sessions. Thursday is fourballs: two golfers per team, each playing their own ball, with the lowest score from each pair counting. Friday is foursomes with five matches, two golfers per team alternating shots on one ball. Saturday brings two fourballs sessions. Sunday is singles, with every United States player facing an International opponent head to head.

Thirty points in total. As defending champions, the United States need 15 points to retain. Either team needs 15.5 points to win.

HOW TEAM USA AUTOMATIC SPOTS ARE CALCULATED

The United States qualifying period began in January 2026 and ran until the BMW Championship. Points are based on PGA Tour results, with the top six in the standings qualifying automatically. Every FedExCup point was worth one qualifying point in 2026 and 1.5 points the previous season. FedExCup points earned at The Players or in majors in 2026 are worth two points.

Scottie Scheffler topped the standings after eight wins during the qualifying period. Cameron Young, the Players champion, and Wyndham Clark, the US Open winner, came next, ahead of Sam Burns, Russell Henley and Collin Morikawa. Captain Brandt Snedeker added six picks: Jacob Bridgeman, Patrick Cantlay, Chris Gotterup, Jackson Koivun, Xander Schauffele and Justin Thomas.

The 1 - 1.5 - 2 weighting structure is a behavioural tool, not a neutral spreadsheet. It pulls players towards a PGA Tour-controlled calendar, rewards presence at The Players and the majors, and turns every rest week into a measurable opportunity cost. Scheffler's eight wins are not only form. He is the archetype the system is built to produce: durable, consistent and locked to a single tour.

HOW THE INTERNATIONAL TEAM AUTOMATIC SPOTS ARE CALCULATED

The International Team standings ran from 8 September until the Tour Championship on 30 August, using Official World Golf Ranking points to determine six automatic spots. Si Woo Kim topped the standings to secure his fourth appearance. Ryan Fox earned a debut by winning The Open at Royal Birkdale. Hideki Matsuyama, Min Woo Lee, Tom Kim and Adam Scott all return.

Captain Geoff Ogilvy added six picks: Sungjae Im, Nico Echavarria, Corey Conners, Nick Taylor, Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Ryo Hisatsune. The International Team contains seven different nationalities.

For the Korean market, this is the most commercially significant number of the edition. Four Korean golfers are involved: Si Woo Kim, Tom Kim, Sungjae Im and Min Woo Lee. Based on my experience following tournaments in Asia and cross-checking Korean broadcast data, a place in the International Team carries different weight from a place in the United States side. In Korea it comes with equipment deals, banking contracts and a week of cable television advertising.

ONE SIDE SELECTS BY FEDEXCUP, THE OTHER BY OWGR

These two measures share no unit, no weighting and no calendar. FedExCup rewards volume on one tour. Official World Golf Ranking rewards relative position across many. One measures workload, the other measures quality of opposition.

The result is that the United States have twelve players sharing one schedule, one support system and one standard of course conditions, while the International Team has seven nationalities, several tours, multiple time zones and almost no weeks competing alongside each other. In a team event, that is a disadvantage that never appears on a scoreboard.

THE LIV BAN AND UNEVENLY SHARED COSTS

The Presidents Cup is run by the PGA Tour, which continues to ban LIV Golf players from its events since the breakaway circuit launched in 2026. Joaquin Niemann of Chile finished third in the LIV season-long standings and played the 2026 edition before leaving the PGA Tour. Australia's Lucas Herbert also had a strong season on that circuit. Cameron Smith and Louis Oosthuizen, former Open champions who have represented the International Team, are no longer eligible. Bryson DeChambeau is among those unable to represent the United States.

The cost of the ban is not shared evenly. The International Team loses a top-three LIV player and a strong Australian season in a squad whose total resources were already thin. The United States lose DeChambeau but retain Scheffler, Schauffele, Thomas, Cantlay and Morikawa. That is free risk insurance, purchased with the depth of a larger tour.

CAPTAINS AND COACHING STRUCTURE

Snedeker served as a vice-captain at the 2026 Presidents Cup and the 2026 Ryder Cup before taking the American captaincy. At 45, he has Gary Woodland, Jim Furyk, Keegan Bradley and Webb Simpson as assistants. Ogilvy appeared in three consecutive Presidents Cups as a player from 2026 and takes the captaincy for the first time, succeeding Mike Weir. His four assistants are Trevor Immelman, Tim Clark, Taylor Pendrith and Camilo Villegas.

Four assistants on each side sounds balanced. But when most American assistants come from the same PGA Tour system, their value is the value of a shared data network. Ogilvy must fuse four assistants from four countries into one voice across four days.

2026 AND THE NUMBER THAT MATTERS MOST

The United States won 18.5-11.5 in 2026, extending the run to ten consecutive editions. They have won 13 of the previous Presidents Cups. The International Team have avoided defeat only twice: a tie in 2026 and a win in 2026.

But the figure I keep returning to is 7.5 out of 12. That is how many points the United States took from the twelve Sunday singles matches in 2026.

CONTRARIAN ANGLE: THE BLIND SPOT SITS ON SUNDAY

The common reading is that the event has lost competitiveness and the PGA Tour should change the format to give the International Team a chance. I read it differently.

Singles is the session that exposes infrastructure gaps rather than talent gaps. There is no team strategy, no cover, only twelve head-to-head matches in which each player swings with habits built on his own tour. When twelve American players share one competitive system all year, they walk into Sunday with one shared standard for green speed, rough length, wind reading and how the closing hole should feel.

A team of seven nationalities does not have that advantage. What it lacks is a common competitive environment, something only money and scheduling can buy. Put another way, the problem is not that the United States are too strong. The problem is that the International Team has never been given an equivalent base to prepare from.

There is a detail rarely mentioned. The defending champion needs only 15 points to retain, while the challenger needs 15.5 to win. That half point is a structural edge, and it lives in the regulations, not on the course.

ON THE COMMERCIAL SIDE

Sponsors and broadcasters pay for a product branded as the best of the world outside Europe. But the guest list has been capped at a subset of players who are still competing at the top. That is an invisible discount, absent from the contract but present in the negotiating value of the next rights renewal.

LIV did not create a crisis for the Presidents Cup. It simply delivered an invoice that had come due.

A good model does not predict the future, it exposes what we choose not to see. The Presidents Cup selection system is exposing exactly that: an event designed to find the strongest team among those allowed to enter, not the strongest team in the sport.

SCHEDULE AND POINTS TO WATCH

Play runs from Thursday to Sunday, opening with Thursday fourballs, then Friday foursomes, two Saturday fourballs sessions and Sunday singles. Thirty points are distributed across four days.

Three things matter to me. First, how Ogilvy pairs players in Friday foursomes, the session demanding the highest synchronisation and the place where seven nationalities becomes a real technical problem. Second, the Sunday singles order, which decides which matches are settled early. Third, recovery time between the two Saturday sessions, when both teams must use nearly their entire roster on a single day.

MOVING CONCLUSION

The Presidents Cup is played on grass, but decided in meeting rooms. If the United States lift the trophy at Medinah on 27 September 2026, the useful question is not how much more talent the International Team needs, but whether the PGA Tour is willing to fix the points system and reopen the guest list, or keep selling a product it has itself restricted. Spectators do not come for the result. They come for the promise, and the promise sits on the payroll.
